Perhaps she has always shown an interest in classical dance, or maybe some friends are taking ballet lessons and your daughter is eager to enjoy this recreational activity with them. You can expect a variety of beneficial outcomes from these classes. For example, your daughter can use her ballet lessons and regular practice sessions at home to stay active, which is important for youths in terms of physical health and mental health. Ballet classes can also be ideal for reducing the risk of your daughter experiencing back pain, both now and in the future. Here are some reasons why.
Many of the movements in ballet dancing help to strengthen the dancer's core. Bends, jumps, and other movements all bolster strength in this area, which can be helpful for lowering the risk of back pain. When someone's core is strong, she is less apt to slouch while sitting or standing, as the strength of the muscles encourage the person to maintain more of an upright posture. Slouching, of course, can be a quick recipe for developing back pain, especially in the lower back.
Improved Body Awareness
Ballet dancers learn to be acutely aware of their bodies. When a dancer is taught to perform a certain movement, she needs to be aware of how her feet are positioned, how her legs are angled, how her torso is positioned, and how her arms and head look. This development of body awareness can be beneficial for keeping back pain at bay. For example, as your daughter goes about her day, she'll be more aware of whether she may be putting her back in a compromised position. If she's bending to lift something heavy, she'll be aware that using the correct form is necessary. Or, as she sits, she'll be more aware of sitting in a natural position that won't lead to pain.
Increased Range Of Motion
Those who are stiff and have a limited range of motion can often sustain back injuries during everyday activities. As your daughter progresses in ballet, she'll build a better range of motion in all of her muscles. Much of ballet involves stretching the muscles, and just as dedicated strategy is effective for improving range of motion, learning ballet is, too. For example, her muscles will be flexible enough to allow her to be able to bend at the waist without experiencing lower back pain.Share
